JOINT MOBILISATION

This form of treatment is normally aimed at a specific joint in order to relieve joint pain, reduce stiffness and improves mobility. It also affects the local blood and fluid circulation which will improve nearby body tissue health. Your Osteopath is very well trained in how to do this in a position that is most comfortable for you. When you are relaxed your Osteopath will carefully move the joint structure through its natural range of motion to help restore how the joint normally functions to help treat your diagnosis. It can be useful in treating some forms of arthritis and other joint problems like adhesive capsulitis, better known as “frozen shoulder”. It is suitable for most people of all ranges of age, sex and fitness levels.

MANIPULATION OF JOINTS

These are specific techniques that can make a “pop” or “crack” when done. Most people would know how this feels if they have ever “cracked” their own knuckles or had another joint “go pop” when they move it in a certain way or position. The aim of these techniques is to relieve acute joint pain and stiffness within that particular joint, both of which are very common in a lot of people’s daily lives. Your Osteopath will gently and quickly move the joint within its normal range of motion so that it will relieve any irritation or muscle spasm in that specific area. These are normally performed by fully trained medical professionals like Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists. It is suitable for most adults of either gender or fitness level. It may not be suitable for anyone with a history of cardiovascular problems, recent trauma, certain stages of pregnancy, or bone problems such as osteoporosis. Your Osteopath will check for all of these and anything else in the case history and examination and if you are suitable and may benefit for it they will inform you and then ask your permission, if you do not wish to have it done just say so!

SPORTS MASSAGE

This kind of massage is done to the general musculature of the body to aid in sporting activities. Your Osteopath will use this in the treatment phase of the session with other techniques. The aim is to increase circulation to a specific muscle group so oxygen and other useful substances are brought into the tissue whilst also removing any waste metabolites that were there, such as carbon dioxide/lactic acid. This will aid overall recovery and performance, whilst helping to relax the person receiving it as it can feel great! It is suitable for most people of all ranges of age, sex and fitness levels.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

This massage is performed on specific target areas of muscle that may be slightly fibrotic or “unhealthier” than the rest. It normally presents as tight/painful or “knotty” muscle bulk, which a lot of people may recognise as it can result from ongoing postural issues. Your Osteopath will let you know what they are doing then gently work deeper into the muscle bulk of the target area to help “break up the knots”. This will gently break down these adhesions in the muscle and help it return to optimum health. It is suitable for most people of all ranges of age, sex and fitness levels.

DIET ADVICE

Your Osteopath is also qualified and experienced in giving dietary advice to help aid your physical treatment sessions and improve your overall health. This is only given after taking a weekly diet diary from you to help understand your current eating habits and how they impact your health. We will then analyse it and give you specific advice that will help improve general health and assist in the healing process of your physical complaint. It is important to be completely honest with your diary information so that we help you manage any ongoing issues that you may have (such as bowel problems, poor general health, food allergies or body weight issues), remember we are here to help not judge! Dietary advice is suitable for people of all ages, gender and fitness levels. We can also refer you to qualified dietary professionals if you would benefit from more intensive dietary treatments.

EXERCISE ADVICE

Your osteopath is trained and experienced in giving exercise advice to aid in your treatment. This will be given to assist with any rehabilitation that you may require in your treatment sessions. This is usually given and explained during your treatment sessions with us and it is for you to follow throughout the period between treatments, because just having a 30 minute treatment every other week is a “drop in the bucket” when compared with the progress you can make by following your exercise regimen alongside your treatments. It is tailored specifically to you and your daily pattern to help you manage any pains or problems that you may have at present or could develop in the future. This is how you take control of your physical health, by building upon the progress you experience in treatments and developing good exercise habits that can massively improve your overall health and decrease stress. It goes without saying that you can get yourself a lot further by using this alongside our treatment sessions rather than relying on just occasional treatments. It is suitable for people of all ages, gender and fitness levels. We can also refer you to some excellent and amazing local personal trainers too!

POSTURAL ADVICE

A very common cause of mechanical pain in the human body is that person’s posture throughout their daily lives through work and sport. A good example would be poor sitting posture in an office worker who spends hours at a computer all day, or a manual worker who repeatedly lifts heavy objects with “their back instead of their legs”. Your osteopath will examine and discuss how your own posture impacts your life and will give you dietary advice. This is given so that you can prevent some of the most common causes of joint and muscle pain in the neck and back. It is tailored specifically to you and your daily pattern to help you manage any pains or problems. These problems are often a result of how we all live and work in our daily lives. If we help you understand the cause of your pain or problems we can help you positively change how you use your body in your daily life pattern so that you can remove or minimise some of the most common strains that you and the UK population experience. It is suitable for people of all ages, gender and fitness levels.
